I like the design of this study almost as much as the result. Ninety adults logged how they felt on 2,958 separate mornings through a digital platform: some after drinking, some after drinking plus a supplement, some after not drinking at all. On the supplement nights, all four wellbeing scores came out higher than on plain drinking nights. The differences were statistically real. Whether they matter in practice, and how much to trust them, is a longer conversation.
What they did
Ninety healthy adults (56% women, average age 44) enrolled through Alethios, an app-based research platform that let them report from home instead of a lab. Each person moved between three conditions: alcohol alone, alcohol plus Cheers Restore, and no drinking. Cheers Restore is built around dihydromyricetin (DHM) and L-cysteine, two ingredients common in hangover products. That produced 2,958 morning surveys, each scored 1 to 10 on energy, mental clarity, physical wellbeing, and sleep quality. The results went through a mixed-effects model, which accounts for the same 90 people reporting over and over, and adjusted for how many drinks each night involved.
Nobody was randomized. People picked which nights to take the supplement, which nights to just drink, and which nights to stay dry. That choice does a lot of quiet work in how you read the word "associated."
What they found
On Cheers Restore nights, compared to alcohol-only nights:
- Mental clarity rose most (b=0.356, 95% CI 0.214 to 0.499, p<0.001)
- Physical wellbeing (b=0.335, 95% CI 0.189 to 0.482, p<0.001)
- Energy (b=0.270, 95% CI 0.133 to 0.407, p<0.001)
- Sleep quality, the weakest of the four (b=0.263, 95% CI 0.096 to 0.430, p=0.002)
All four moved the same direction, which is more convincing than any single number on its own. But the standardized effect sizes were small, Cohen's d between 0.20 and 0.32, roughly a fraction of a point on a 10-point scale. Real, statistically, across nearly 3,000 surveys. Not the kind of jump you'd notice on any given morning.
AUDIT-C scores (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption, a standard drinking-risk screen) stayed flat across the study. So no sign that having a recovery supplement on hand pushed people to drink more. That's the usual worry with anything marketed as a safety net.
What it means
This is an association, not proof the supplement caused any of it. People self-selected which nights to use it, and that kind of choice tends to correlate with other things, like better sleep habits, or just planning the night out in advance. The company behind Cheers Restore funded the study too. That doesn't erase the numbers, but I'd want an outside team to reproduce them before taking the effect sizes at face value. I've written before about how industry funding quietly tilts alcohol research toward the conclusion someone was paying for, and this is worth reading with the same caution.
The biology isn't far-fetched, though. Metabolizing alcohol burns through glutathione and other antioxidants. Nutrient depletion is a real, documented part of how heavy drinking wears down cells, so a supplement aimed at that pathway has a plausible mechanism behind it. Plausible isn't proven, and this trial can't close that gap.
What a product like this doesn't do is move the decision earlier. You reach for it after the drinking's done, hoping to soften a morning already in motion. That's a different problem than the one AlcoBalance is built for. It shows you your peak and your pace while you're still deciding what to drink next, not the next day when recovery tricks are the only lever left.
